USA’s Invisible Position

This article was also printed in Common Dreams and ICH despite its rather anemic analysis lacking all references to economic aspects in general and devoid of people in particular. The above quote comes at the beginning of the rather long article dealing with the different phases of US power plays in the Middle East.
What is the USA “position (that is eroding) in the Greater Middle East?” As the article doesn’t mention it, I assume that I’m making a fool of myself asking an obvious question, but what is the USA position in the “Greater” Middle East?
