Scientific Reality Denial

BigThink1030912

Four quotes by four different people:

1. “It is consciousness that creates the material universe, not the other way around.”

2. “When you contemplate the universe, part of the universe becomes conscious of itself.”

3. “Stars may be thinking entities that deliberately control their paths … the entire cosmos may be self-aware.”

4. “In principle, some purely physical systems that are not biological or organic may also be conscious.”

You might guess that these quotes come from patients at a mental institution, but each one stems from an accredited PhD scientist. Robert Lanza, for example, quote 1, has been listed among the 100 Most Influentiel People in the World by TIME magazine, and voted the 3rd most important scientist alive by the NY Times. Lanza’s theory of the mind creating material goes under the name Biocentrism and has quite a few supporters among his peers.

Steve Stewart-Williams, quote 2, professor of psychology.
Gregory Matloff, quote 3, professor of physics.
Christof Koch, quote 4, President of the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle.

Most people believe that education builds intelligence* and have difficulty defending their natural reasoning against the nonsense of academic experts. Jonathan Swift dealt with preposterous experts in the third part of Gulliver’s Travels (1726). In the land of Laputa learned gentlemen engaged in extracting sunbeams from cucumbers, softening marble for use in pillows, and discovering conspiracies by examining the excrement of suspects.

The highly educated nincompoops mentioned above along with many of their peers who deny reality by subordinating it to consciousness (or by attributing consciousness to inorganic realities) have a long pedigree going back to ancient Greece. All of them have one thing in common, ARROGANCE, an arrogance of cosmic proportions capable of challenging reality and the universe itself.

I mentioned before that someone might guess that the four quotes above come from patients at a mental institution. They do, but the academic culture of a decadent Empire is not referred to as a mental institution. It should be. It houses metrological scientists who deny global warming in the face of rising temperatures; agricultural experts who torture livestock and poison the soil; pharmaceutical experts who drug people to sickness and death; economical experts who claim taking money from the masses and giving it to a few wealthy will be good for the masses because some of the money will trickle back down; political experts who claim that a government of bribe-saturated millionaires channeling wealth to billionaires is democracy; military experts who bomb people to save them…

But let’s be honest! There are obvious advantages to denying the present reality.

*(Education builds knowledge, facts, which are mental tools. They no more determine the quality of thought than hammars, saws and boards determine the quality of a house. If facts were equated with intelligence or cleverness, a dictionary or a database would be smarter than people.)
