10 Reasons to Flush Commercial Drinks
The sphere of commercial drinks is a major cause of pollution and environmental fever. Although not the only cause, it is one which can be remedied. *
The Water Campaign (WC):
- is easily to implement.
- is concrete.
- includes everyone.
- promotes the economy and health of the people.
- improves the environment.
- can sink a flagship of the corporate empire.
- is not an alternative.
- empowers the individual
- illustrates people’s potential
- exposes false friends
Number 1. WC is easy to implement. You don’t have to climb a barricade, travel to a demonstration, occupy a government office, confront police or even rearrange your weekly routine.
Number 2. It’s concrete, not an abstract cry for action. It’s doable, as opposed to many idealistic but unlikely or impossible campaigns. People do not have the resources or the inclination to engage in enterprises with doubtful chances of success.
Number 3. The WC includes everyone and therefore cuts through the sticky and tricky web of special interests, political affiliations and ethnic bindings.
Number 4. The WC promotes the economy and health of people. All too many idealistic actions involve sacrifice and costs. The WC does the opposite.
Number 5. The WC will relieve significant pressure on the environment. It is a workable and powerful part of the environment movement. It could develop into the most effective environmental improvement in decades.
Number 6. The WC can sink a flagship of the corporate empire, the ruling force in the prevailing order locked into the demands of profit. The tyranny of money reigns. The WC can win a great battle against this tyranny.
Number 7. The WC is not instead of or in opposition to any other action. Joining the water campaign permits people to continue doing what they have been doing, or to initiate other actions. There are thousands of other things to be done to create a world oriented to the needs of people. The WC integrates with them all.
Number 8. The WC allows everyone to take personal responsibility without the need of directives, representatives or an organization. Individuals empower themselves and become their own commanders.
Number 9. The WC can show the people what they can accomplish by taking responsibility for the conditions they encounter instead of expecting others to solve their problems. Once they realize their own power to execute meaningful change, the barriers keeping them from building the future of their desire will have crumbled.
Number 10. The WC will expose false friends, stupid experts and bullshit pundits. As soon as the WC gains a little traction, all forms of authorities and impotent champions will journey out from their intellectual slums to condemn the efforts to avoid commercial drinks. “Progressive” forces who haven’t accomplished anything for decades will explain to us why the WC will not accomplish anything. They will all say the same thing, “There are so many great problems, don’t waste your time doing what you can.” and threaten with the dangers of disturbing the prevailing order.
Hasn’t the time come to flush the prevailing order down the WC?

* Facts about commercial drinks
The production and distribution of bottled water in the USA spits as much hydrocarbons into the atmosphere as 400 000 cars every year. To that figure can be added the rest of the bottled-water sales in the world. Note that I’m talking exclusively of bottled water, a modest consumption compared to all of the Cokes, Pepsis and other sodas pouring out from the sphere of commercial drinks. Cans of Coca-Cola, for example, and only cans, not bottles or any other form or brand, are sold to the tune of 200 million per day world-wide. What happens to the tons of special paint on these cans, and other packaging, that resist the stress of industrial production and tough distribution conditions? We don’t have to entertain our imagination with the numbers to realize that serious pollution is excreted from the process of producing, distributing and discarding commercial drinks.
Water is a basic condition of life. No water, no life. That rule applies to bacteria, beetles, bears and bald Baptists from Boston. Life needs water, H2O, hydrogen and oxygen. Together with carbon they are needed for every particle of life, whether a building block of protein, the wall of a cell, or strands of DNA. You can’t improve water. Whatever you add must be removed by the chemical process of the body to utilize the hydrogen and oxygen. Whatever we do to complicate access to water complicates life. Survival is difficult enough without adding complications.
