Ancient Misinforming Beauty
(Painting by C.W. Mitchell, 1885)
Hypatia was a 4-star beauty; face, body, soul and mind; kind, helpful, humble and brilliant; a leading mathematician of her time in the years before and after 400.
But because she considered herself a scientist, and did not want to take part in or commit herself to the debate about the godly nature of Christ, the Patriarch of Alexandria, Cyril, accused her of being a misinformer. A group of fanatical Christians captured her, ripped her clothes off, cut her skin off, killed and burned her.
We’ve come a long way since Hypatia’s time. We no longer cut the skin off misinformers. Not physically in any case.

“Using physical violence over disagreement,
decides who is strongest, not who is right.
Censorship is a form of intellectual violence
by the strongest owners of the channels of communication.”
