Today’s Devils

Today’s devils never appear as devils.
People would recognize them,
resist
and possibly defeat them.
Devils don’t want us to fear them,
they want us to fear everything
except them.
We should fear things abstract,
complicated,
large,
different,
on a high level,
far away,
uncertain,
definitely uncertain.
The devils are all over the place
well-dressed,
clean,
smiling,
authoritative,
definitely authoritative.
They are willing to protect us
from our fears.
They are confident
that they can keep making us believe
that they and only they
can deal with the problems threatening us,
while they and only they
are the source of our problems
and are our only threat.
