Cracks in the Box

During the past year, while small and middle-sized businesses were slaughtered, people were locked down and isolated, depression, substance abuse, suicides, domestic violence, unemployment and all grades of crime increased, as did the death rate, a couple of thousand billionaires increased their combined fortunes from $8 trillion to $13 trillion. Will someone please explain how the vulgarians could increase their holdings by 64% under a period where 100s of millions of people suffered catastrophic loses?

Or is my question an unacceptable idea?
