N.Korea – Confused About the Obvious

All 15 members of the UN Security Council voted to enforce damaging sanctions against N.Korea, a little independent country that hasn’t any bases beyond its borders and has never attacked or threatened anyone. The world knows that the United Snakes instigated this act of aggression, but why did China and Russia go along with this mockery of international law?

I turned to one of my very favorite writers who has consistently provided sharp and nourishing analysis of world events. Using the email I found on his website, I asked for his take on China and Russia approving the sanctions.

He responded promptly. Perhaps too promptly, before his brain was engaged:
”There is a lot of politics and diplomacy involved. But please read between the lines: China and Russia will never abandon DPRK in case it would get attacked by the West.”

Stating that politics and diplomacy are involved is equivalent to stating that there will be weather tomorrow. What politics and diplomacy? I might have excused his reply as a brain bump were it not for the second sentence. The sanctions are an attack by the West. He, if anyone, should know this. Russia and China have not only abandoned DPRK, they are accomplices in an act of aggression against it.

His reply compounded my confusion until it forced me to see the obvious. Russia and China are also money-oriented countries temporarily (economically) dependent on the United Snakes. They sacrificed DPRK as an act of appeasement. (And will eventually reap the consequence of their folly.) It’s not about politics or diplomacy, but money, Dorothy, money. Not freedom, justice, honor, peace or any other synthetically manicured euphemism. We can ask ourselves why these two countries never tried to initiate sanctions against Israel or Saudi Arabia, for example. It is their right as permanent members of the UN Security Council. They are obviously more concerned about money than right.

Is it a mere a coincidence that directly after the sanctions China announced that it will fund the construction of a counter-terrorism base in Afghanistan? Surely they know that Afghanistan is an occupied country. Is this what is known as diplomacy?
